À la veille du quart de finale de la Coupe du Monde 2026 entre l’Argentine et la Suisse, prévu ce dimanche à 01h00 GMT, Lionel Scaloni a répondu avec fermeté aux accusations de favoritisme dont l’Albiceleste fait régulièrement l’objet. Face aux journalistes, le technicien a tenu à rappeler que ce type de polémique ne date pas d’aujourd’hui. « En 1986, on disait déjà qu’on bénéficiait d’un traitement de faveur. Ce n’est donc pas nouveau… On s’en sert comme d’une forme de rébellion pour les pousser à se surpasser. Avec la VAR aujourd’hui, il est très difficile d’obtenir de l’aide. Il n’y a pas de favoritisme, il s’agit davantage d’un phénomène lié aux réseaux sociaux », a lâché au début de la conférence de presse.

Scaloni défend l’intégrité de la compétition

Pour le sélectionneur argentin, les avancées technologiques ont considérablement réduit les risques d’erreurs susceptibles d’avantager une équipe. Il estime que l’utilisation de la VAR et les protocoles d’arbitrage garantissent davantage d’équité durant les rencontres.

Dans cette logique, Scaloni a poursuivi son argumentaire en déclarant : « De nos jours, même les plus petites choses prennent des proportions démesurées. Il n’y a pas de « coup de pouce » dans le football. Vu qu’on est en 2026, avec toutes les technologies actuelles, c’est impossible. Au final, les règles sont là. Elles sont claires. C’est plus une question de règles que de réalité ».

Un quart de finale très attendu

L’Argentine abordera désormais son duel face à la Suisse avec l’objectif de poursuivre son parcours vers un nouveau sacre mondial. Au-delà des polémiques, Lionel Scaloni souhaite que l’attention reste centrée sur le terrain, où son équipe devra confirmer son statut face à une formation suisse réputée pour sa solidité et son organisation défensive.

France scored 30 second-half points to thrash the Wallabies at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday.

Les Bleus trailed 21-12 at the break before going on to claim a 42-26 victory – their first win over Australia in Brisbane since 1972.

It was a familiar story for the Wallabies, who led Ireland last Saturday only to lose by two points.

They matched France in the first 40 minutes but faded badly in the second as the speed of the French attack proved overwhelming.

Played in front of a sellout crowd of 52,000 in perfect conditions, both sides looked to throw the ball around and attack with pace.

France opened the scoring in just the third minute when lock Emmanuel Meafou barged over after some sustained pressure.

Down 7-0, the Wallabies hit back when hooker Brandon Paenga-Amosa crossed after a clever move at the front of the lineout. Scrumhalf Ryan Lonergan converted from the sideline to make it 7-7 after 10 minutes.

The French were taking full advantage of the conditions, moving the ball wide at every opportunity and stretching the Australian defence.

They were rewarded in the 18th minute when flyhalf Romain Ntamack put a clever kick through for winger Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang, who flew past Declan Meredith to score in the corner.

Brisbane-born Meafou was having an eventful match on his return to his hometown, scoring the first try but then being shown a yellow card after a high tackle on Rob Valetini.

The Wallabies took full advantage of his absence, outstanding flanker Fraser McReight burrowing over and Lonergan converting to make it 14-12 to the home side.

McReight got his second when he crashed over on the back of a rolling maul to put the Wallabies up 21-12 five minutes before the break.

After holding out a marauding French forward pack right on half-time, the Wallabies would have gone into the break full of confidence with a nine-point lead.

REPORT: Jordan breaks record as All Blacks overwhelm Azzurri

France captain Maxime Lucu narrowed the gap to six points with a 46m penalty five minutes after the restart.

They closed to within a point five minutes later when Grandidier-Nkanang crossed out wide for his second, then went ahead when Ntamack scored in the corner with Wallabies fullback Tom Wright off the field with a yellow card for a professional foul.

Lucu converted from the sideline to make it 27-21, which became 34-21 minutes later when lock Florian Verhaeghe crashed over under the posts.

Lucu put the score out beyond two converted tries with a penalty from in front, then France sealed it with a try to right wing Theo Attissogbe.

A consolation try by lock Jeremy Williams ensured Australia got a four-try bonus point.

Manchester City tient sa nouvelle pépite. Le club anglais a officialisé ce samedi l’arrivée de Jeremy Monga, jeune ailier de 17 ans en provenance de Leicester City. L’international anglais des moins de 21 ans s’est engagé pour cinq saisons, jusqu’en juin 2031, et rejoint la City Football Academy avec l’étiquette de l’un des plus grands espoirs du football anglais.

Un prodige formé à Leicester

Jeremy Monga a effectué toute sa formation à Leicester City, qu’il a intégré dès la catégorie des moins de 9 ans. Doté d’une vitesse impressionnante, d’excellentes qualités de dribble, de puissance et d’un réel sens du but, il a rapidement gravi les échelons au sein du club.

À seulement 15 ans, il évoluait déjà avec l’équipe des moins de 21 ans des Foxes. En novembre 2024, à l’âge de 15 ans, trois mois et 22 jours, il est devenu le plus jeune buteur de l’histoire de la Premier League 2 en trouvant le chemin des filets face à Aston Villa.

Des records précoces chez les Foxes

Malgré son très jeune âge, Monga a rapidement découvert la Premier League. Il a effectué ses débuts dans l’élite anglaise en avril 2025 en entrant en jeu lors de la défaite de Leicester face à Newcastle United (3-0). Cette apparition a fait de lui le deuxième plus jeune joueur de l’histoire à disputer un match de Premier League. Il a ensuite cumulé sept apparitions en championnat au cours de la saison 2024-2025.

La saison suivante, le jeune ailier a poursuivi sa progression. Titularisé pour la première fois avec Leicester lors d’un match de Carabao Cup contre Huddersfield Town en août 2025, il est devenu le plus jeune joueur à débuter une rencontre officielle avec les Foxes.

Quelques jours plus tard, il s’est offert un nouveau record en inscrivant un but face à Preston. À 16 ans et 37 jours, il est devenu le plus jeune buteur de l’histoire du Championship, effaçant des tablettes une marque jusque-là détenue par Jude Bellingham.

« Un rêve devenu réalité »

Jeremy Monga ne cache pas son enthousiasme à l’idée de poursuivre son développement sous les couleurs de Manchester City.

« Quand j’ai appris que Manchester City s’intéressait à moi, j’ai immédiatement compris que c’était le bon choix. Rejoindre un club de ce niveau est un rêve devenu réalité pour n’importe quel jeune joueur. Manchester City est la référence en Angleterre depuis une dizaine d’années et il offre également de vraies opportunités aux joueurs issus de son centre de formation, comme Phil Foden ou Nico O’Reilly. Cela prouve qu’il existe un véritable parcours vers l’équipe première », a déclaré le jeune Anglais.

Le directeur sportif des Citizens, Hugo Viana, s’est également réjoui de cette signature.

« Jeremy est un joueur extrêmement prometteur qui a déjà énormément progressé malgré son jeune âge. À seulement 17 ans, nous sommes convaincus qu’il possède un fort potentiel et que Manchester City représente l’environnement idéal pour poursuivre son développement », a-t-il affirmé.

Manchester City a enfin souhaité la bienvenue à sa nouvelle recrue, en espérant le voir poursuivre son ascension sous les couleurs des Skyblues.

A new-look Ireland were made to work for a bonus-point victory against Japan in Newcastle, north of Sydney, on Saturday.

After conceding an early try, Ireland fought back to lead 19-13 at the break before going on to win 36-20.

After their thrilling 33-31 victory over the Wallabies in Sydney last week, where they rallied from behind four times, Ireland tightened up their defence and dominated possession.

But they were still guilty of some silly errors and their set-piece struggled to fire.

They went to the break with a six-point lead after a scrappy first-half and stayed focused to complete the job with coach Andy Farrell handing four players – Sean Jansen, Billy Bohan, Sam Illo and Bryn Ward – their debut.

It ensured a sixth consecutive win dating back to February, having also beaten Scotland, Wales, England and Italy.

That record will be put to the test next week when they travel to Auckland and an Eden Park cauldron for a blockbuster showdown with New Zealand.

The All Blacks are also two-from-two at the inaugural 12-team tournament, backing up their 34-32 victory over France with a 47-17 romp against Italy.

Japan host Six Nations champions France next, with Les Blues on a high after crushing a hapless Australia 42-26 in Brisbane with a rampant second-half display.

Farrell made nine changes to his starting side, with an eye on the All Blacks clash, and Tadhg Beirne named as captain for the first time.

Japan, who were brimming with confidence after beating Italy at home a week ago, made just one change with Taira Main replacing Kippei Ishida on the left wing.

Main was in the thick of the action immediately when Ireland hooker Ronan Kelleher put too much on a lineout throw after three minutes and he gleefully collected and dashed 60m to the line.

Fullback Takuro Matsunaga added the extras, only for Ireland to quickly hit back when flanker Nick Timoney spotted a gap and dived under the posts for a converted try after some good ruck work.

A soft penalty allowed Matsunaga to restore Japan’s lead on 17 minutes in front of 11,021 fans at McDonald Jones Stadium, a host venue for the 2027 World Cup.

But after their nervy start, Ireland settled and began patiently building phases with the pressure rewarded when prop Tom O’Toole crashed over on a penalty advantage for a 12-10 lead.

Another unnecessary penalty, for offside, gifted Matsunaga three more points.

Again, Ireland kept their composure and with the maul working efficiently Craig Casey fired the ball out the back to Robbie Henshaw who had enough power to burrow over for another converted try and a 19-13 lead.

The second period started well for Ireland when No 8 Jansen barged over, with the move stemming from a lineout.

But Japan were no pushovers and came storming back with a converted try for replacement hooker Hayate Era closing the gap to six points with 22 minutes left.

Replacement flyhalf Harry Byrne nailed a crucial penalty 10 minutes from time with a converted try to replacement hooker Tom Stewart at the death sealing the deal.
