Pirates and Durban City meet again in post-CAF clash
Orlando Pirates and Durban City are both coming off successful adventures in African competition as they meet tomorrow in the Betway Premiership at the Orlando Amstel Arena.
Pirates and Gallants both victorious
While Pirates were in Orlando on Saturday, seeing off La Cure Waves of Mauritius in the Caf Champions League, Durban City were in Burundi, beating Rukinzo FC 2-1 to complete a 3-1 aggregate victory and reach the next round of Caf Confederation Cup qualifying.
It remains to be seen just how tired the side from KwaZulu Natal are tomorrow after their long journey back, but they should be in good spirits as they aim for just a second Premiership win of the campaign.
“It was a good two-leg performance from us. We knew what we had to do after the first leg and the players handled the two games well,” Durban City head coach Khalil Ben Youssef told the club’s official website.
“We didn’t come here to sit back and protect the first-leg result, we wanted to play, we wanted to score, and we wanted to win the game, and we did that.”
Durban City will now face Mauritian side AS Port-Louis in the final qualifying round for the Confederation Cup group stages.
As for Pirates, they will take on African Stars from Namibia in their final Champions League qualifier
Pirates survived a scare against La Cure Waves as they fell behind early in Orlando. The Buccaneers, however, quickly equalised and led 3-1 by half time.
Rapoo – ‘They weren’t going to beat us at home’
Pirates defender Neo Rapoo said that Pirates were always confident they could turn the tie around.
“They weren’t going to beat us at home, we just had to keep going forward and create chance after chance. We knew we would get goals,” Rapoo told Pirates media.
City, last year’s Nedbank Cup winners, have struggled for goals in the Premiership so far, netting just three times in five matches. Ben Youssef’s side, however, have the league’s second strongest defence, letting in just two goals so far.
That record is only bettered by Pirates, who have conceded just once while hammering in 12 goals at the other end of the pitch.
Reigning champions Pirates currently trail Mamelodi Sundowns by seven points at the top of the table. Ouaddou’s side do have three games in hand, two of which will have been played before the upcoming international break.
The Buccaneers will face Marumo Gallants at the Royal Bafokeng Sports Palace on Sunday. First, however, comes Durban City in a repeat of this season’s MTN8 quarterfinal. In that game, City took the Buccaneers right to the wire, with only a goal from Thapelo Mokobodi in the last minute of extra time sealing a 2-1 win.
Springbok Women get to work in Wales
The Springbok Women enjoyed a low key, but productive training session at the Cardiff Metropolitan University on Monday as they started to fine tune their preparations for Friday’s WXV Global Series opener with Wales at Cardiff Arms Park.
The team travelled from Cape Town on Saturday afternoon and arrived in the Welsh capital Sunday evening, but the long haul was soon forgotten once they stepped onto the training pitch on Monday, much to the delight of co-coach Laurian Johannes-Haupt.
“It was a good session and although some players were still a bit sore following the long haul flight that included a transit in Dubai, we did some good work today, with clarity the main focus,” said Johannes-Haupt.
“We brought some match simulation into the session as well and everybody understands their roles.”
It was windy and raining during parts of the session, but according to Johannes-Haupt that did not dampen the spirits of the squad, and the players are keen to take on Wales, a team they last faced in 2021.
“Look, there is nothing you can do about the weather and it is going to be like this for the rest of the week, so the earlier we adapt the better,” she said.
“We trained in sunshine before we came over, but this is not the end of the world. We have an opportunity to take on a class team like Wales and that us something we will be embracing this week.”
The fact that South Africa only won two of six matches and have not beaten Wales since 2010 only add to the expected effort from the visitors on Friday.
“We wanted to be part of the WXV Global Series for a reason and the main one was the opportunity to play the best teams in the world,” said Johannes-Haupt.
“That opportunity starts on Friday. It will be tough. Wales is also a forward-dominating team, like us, so it will be an interesting match-up.”
The squad left Cape Town on Friday with a late change, as Anacadia Minnaar could not make the trip, which resulted in Felicia Jacobs being added to the group.
As expected, Jacobs, who toured with the squad to Fiji last month, had little trouble to slot into the session. Incidentally, Jacobs made her Test debut for South Africa against Wales in Cardiff in 2019.
Johannes-Haupt said: “Felicia has been part of the squad all season, so we would not have expected less. It is a pity that Anacadia could not travel, but this gives Felica the opportunity to add more experience on the international stage and we are excited about her involvement.”
The team to play Wales will be announced on Wednesday.

Da Cruz: I’m Happy With The Squad I Have
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz says he is happy with the squad at his disposal and will only consider adding to his ranks if the right player becomes available.
The Glamour Boys have bolstered their squad with several additions during the transfer window.
Those transfers include the likes of Khanyisa Mayo, Thabo Moloisane, Renaldo Leaner, Langelihle Phili, Faiz Abrahams and Adolf Bitegeko.
Despite their recent disappointment, Da Cruz believes Amakhosi are on the right path in terms of their style and quality of play, insisting they must remain committed to the process and not give up.
“No, I am happy with the squad that I have,” Da Cruz told the media.
“If a player is going to arrive, I think I would take the opportunity, but I don’t want to take a player to take him. If it is to take someone, it is someone that will be useful,” he added.
“For the moment, I am very happy with the squad that we have. We are moving forward; we are disappointed with the result.
“But we are on the right path in terms of the quality of the game, in terms of the modelling of the game, in terms of what we want to show. We must continue; we must not give up.”
