Kaizer Chiefs seal CAF Confederation Cup spot with late show in Polokwane
Kaizer Chiefs have officially booked their place in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup following a 2-0 victory over Sekhukhune United in the Betway Premiership at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday night.
The win sees Amakhosi return to continental football for the first time in years, securing a top-three finish in the Betway Premiership with two games to spare. Chiefs moved to 51 points, leaving fourth-placed AmaZulu FC (44 points) unable to catch them, as Usuthu can only reach a maximum of 50 points.
After a cagey affair that looked destined for a stalemate, the match burst into life in the final ten minutes.
Tashreeq Morris, making a fairy-tale return to action after a long injury layoff, proved to be the hero. Coming off the bench in the 62nd minute for Flávio Silva, Morris netted his first goal of the season in the 86th minute. The veteran striker showed elite predatory instincts, poking home a left-footed shot from close range following a pinpoint cross from the lively Makabi Lilepo.
Chiefs doubled their lead in stoppage time when Lilepo was fouled inside the area by Vuyo Letlapa. Young sensation Mfundo Vilakazi stepped up and coolly converted the resulting penalty, slotting the ball into the bottom right corner to spark wild celebrations among the travelling supporters.
CHIEFS RETURN TO THE CONTINENT AFTER SEKUKHUNE CLINCH
The opening 45 minutes saw both sides struggle to find a clinical edge despite several half-chances. Gastón Sirino and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo were central to Chiefs’ creative efforts, with Toaster Nsabata forced into several smart saves to keep Babina Noko in the game.
At the other end, Brandon Petersen was called into action just before the break, producing a superb save to deny a goal-bound header from Bright Ndlovu.
Chiefs coach made decisive moves at the start of the second half, introducing Thabo Cele and Reeve Frosler to stabilise the midfield and provide more width. However, it was the introduction of Morris and Vilakazi past the hour mark that ultimately broke Sekhukhune’s resistance.
The result ends a frustrating run of draws for the Soweto giants and ensures they will represent South Africa on the continent next season alongside league champions Kruger United and second-placed Milford FC.

Great escape for Arsenal as Trossard strike keeps title hopes alive
LONDON, England, May 10, 2026 – Leandro Trossard’s late winner moved Arsenal a step closer to the Premier League title and left West Ham United deep in relegation trouble after a dramatic finale at the London Stadium.
Arsenal had been frustrated by the struggling Hammers until Trossard, who struck the woodwork twice within seconds in the first half, broke the deadlock when his shot deflected in off Tomas Soucek with seven minutes left.
It came moments after a vital save by Arsenal keeper David Raya from Mateus Fernandes, the victory putting Arsenal five points ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.
West Ham thought they had equalised deep into stoppage time but Callum Wilson’s strike was ruled out for a foul on Raya after a lengthy video assistant referee (VAR) examination, much to the fury of the home supporters.
It meant joy unconfined for Arsenal, but for West Ham the contrast could not be greater as they are in the relegation places, one point behind Tottenham Hotspur, having played a game more.
Arsenal dominated the opening exchanges but lost momentum when manager Mikel Arteta surprisingly moved Declan Rice to right-back after Ben White went off with a knee injury.
Rice returned to his more familiar midfield role in the second half, but West Ham gained confidence and it needed that crucial save from keeper Raya – who had earlier saved from Taty Castellanos’ header – to deny Fernandes from from point-blank range when he looked certain to score.
Trossard then made his vital intervention and Wilson’s goal was disallowed for the foul on Raya, meaning Arsenal – who have already reached the Champions League Final – close in on their first title for 22 years.
