Après une nuit réparatrice, ayant suivi leur voyage vers Kansas City et le décalage horaire, les coéquipiers du capitaine Ryad Mahrez ont entamé la matinée du lundi 8 juin par le traditionnel meeting qu’organise la FIFA à l’entame de chacune des compétitions qu’elle organise.

L’atelier d’information organisé par visioconférence, a porté essentiellement sur les nouvelles Lois du jeu introduites par l’IFAB (International football association Board) et les dernières directives arbitrales qui seront mises en œuvre lors de la compétition.

Pour rappel, les joueurs et membres du staff technique avaient déjà bénéficié d’une session similaire assurée par le responsable de l’arbitrage au sein de la Fédération algérienne de football (FAF), Mehdi Abid Charef, au centre technique national (CTN) de Sidi Moussa.

Avant de déjeuner, les joueurs ont été conviés à une séance de shooting-photos et de captations vidéo assurée par des équipes de la division média de la FIFA dans le cadre des activités médiatiques et promotionnelles des sélections participantes.

Dans l’après-midi, les joueurs ont rejoint leur endroit préféré, le Complexe sportif de Rock Chalk Park, situé au sein de l’Université du Kansas, pour effectuer leur première séance d’entraînement en terre américaine.

Une séance qui débuta à 18h00 (minuit à Alger), où les joueurs ont commencé par des exercices physiques afin de se dégourdir et de réveiller les muscles, avant de laisser place au volet technicotactique en prévision du second match amical prévu, ce mercredi, face à la Bolivie.

Pour leur part, les représentants de la presse accrédités, ont pu profiter du quart d’heure d’ouverture pour immortaliser les premières photos et images en direction des USA, où l’effectif au grand complet s’est adonné studieusement à ses premières touches de balle, toujours dans la perspective d’être fin prêts le 17 juin pour affronter les champions du Monde argentins.

Les Verts reviendront cet après-midi au niveau de l’un des terrains du Complexe sportif de Rock Chalk Park, pour enchainer leur deuxième séance d’entraînement et avancer dans leur programme de préparation.

Former Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena has defended himself against criticism surrounding Diego Forlan’s opening goal in South Africa’s 3-0 defeat to Uruguay at the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Bafana Bafana suffered the loss in their second group-stage match at Loftus Versfeld after opening the tournament with a promising 1-1 draw against Mexico.

Mokoena, known as “Mbazo”, was widely blamed for giving Forlan too much space before the Uruguay star unleashed the long-range effort that put his side ahead.

The goal shifted the momentum of the match as Uruguay went on to dominate proceedings.

Speaking on Diski Dine, Mokoena explained his thinking in the build-up to the goal and insisted there was little he could have done differently.

“In my head, I was thinking he struck the ball very well, but we had Khune in goals. Then there was the Jabulani ball. I hated that ball,” Mokoena said.

“We went into the Uruguay game after drawing with Mexico and we knew this guy could strike a ball.”

Explaining why he did not close Forlan down more aggressively, Mokoena said he had to weigh up the risk of leaving space behind him.

“For the first goal, I came a bit closer because you don’t want to commit yourself. He wasn’t the type of player who would constantly take you on, but he was quick. I was thinking if I went tighter, there would be space behind me.”

The former defender also highlighted Forlan’s pedigree, arguing that the quality of the strike was more a reflection of the Uruguayan’s talent than any defensive mistake.

“It was nobody’s fault. Remember, this guy played for Manchester United and Villarreal. Look at the teams he played for. That tells you the kind of quality player he was.”

Mokoena talks about Forlan’s goal

Forlan went on to score twice as Uruguay secured a crucial victory, leaving Bafana Bafana with an uphill battle to reach the knockout stages.

Despite beating France 2-1 in their final group match, South Africa became the first host nation in World Cup history to be eliminated in the group stage.

Was Mbazo to blame?

Former Orlando Pirates striker Tshegofatso Mabasa penned a heartfelt message to the club following his departure after eight years.

The 29-year-old scored 50 goals in 141 appearances for the Buccaneers making him the club’s second highest goalscorer.

Having spent the last six month of his Pirates career on loan to Stellenbosch, Mabasa is now a free agent.

On Tuesday, the man known as “Sniper”, bid farewell to his former club.

“Eight years ago, a young man walked through the doors of Rand Stadium with nothing but a dream and a hunger to succeed,” Mabasa wrote on his Instagram.

“Today, I leave this great institution with immense gratitude and pride. Thank you to Orlando Pirates for giving me the opportunity to be part of a club whose history and legacy will forever remain close to my heart.

To every player, coach, staff member, and teammate I shared this journey with, thank you for the memories, friendships, and moments that will stay with me forever.”

Mabasa leaves Orlando Pirates

In eight years at Pirates, the 29-year-old established himself as a top striker not only at the club but in the league as well.

“From the 3-Peat in Durban, to the 2023/24 Golden-Boot award, the back-to-back success in Mbombela, that unforgettable night in Cairo, ending the league drought, and celebrating the Club’s 2nd highest All time goal scorer with my 50th goals for Orlando Pirates; these are memories I will cherish for life,” Mabasa added.

“To ALL the faithful Buccaneers, thank you for your unwavering love, support, and belief throughout the years. I am forever grateful.

“As I take a bow, I wish the Club and its supporters nothing but continued success. Thank you for everything,” he concluded.

With Mabasa having left Pirates, his next destination remains unknown.
