Shreyas Iyer believes young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has all the ingredients to become a dominant force in Indian cricket, but insists the youngster must be given the right time and space to grow.
Speaking on Jio Hotstar’s ‘Follow the Blues: Sarpanch Shreyas’ ahead of India’s five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Iyer said, “Vaibhav is a very silent guy, but on the field, is very destructive. So, that’s like an irony when you look at him. He’s a very charming, sweet guy to interact with and good to have him around the dressing room. And I know that his time will come, because we have been playing with World Cup-winning openers right now, and they deserve the time out there and he’s still in the 15. So definitely, when his time comes, he is going to dominate Indian cricket.”
Additionally, Iyer also highlighted the fearless mindset he wants from the young Indian side and spoke about the value of supporting each other. “We want players to be more liberal, more expressive in terms of being fearless out there and not restrict their instincts.” He also spoke about supporting each other through thick and thin and having each other’s back, especially during tough times.
The T20I captain also spoke about his own approach with the bat, saying, “I love to play the situation.” He added that once settled, he looks to “take down the bowlers left, right, and centre.”
With India building towards the next T20 World Cup, Iyer made it clear that winning remains the priority before experimentation. “The most important thing for me is to win the series, and then we can experiment with the playing combination. Experimentation from the start doesn’t make sense because then the players also get insecure. I don’t like that mindset. I have been in that mindset in the past and I know how that feels from inside”.
