“This goal belongs to whole nation”: Torres dedicates FIFA World Cup-winning strike to Spain
New Jersey [US], July 20 (ANI): Spain forward Ferran Torres dedicated his World Cup-winning goal to the entire nation after his extra-time strike secured a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final on Sunday (local time).
Hours after helping La Roja lift their second World Cup title, Torres shared pictures of his decisive moments on X and wrote, “This goal belongs to the whole nation." palladian.co.za
The 26-year-old’s only goal of the tournament proved to be its most significant. His clinical finish in the 106th minute settled a tense final at MetLife Stadium, ending Argentina’s hopes of retaining the title and delivering Spain’s first World Cup triumph since 2010.
Torres’ winner also evoked memories of Andres Iniesta’s iconic extra-time goal against the Netherlands in the 2010 final, which handed Spain their maiden World Cup crown.
In a tournament where he featured in all eight matches, Torres contributed one goal and one assist, with his solitary strike becoming the defining moment of Spain’s campaign.
The final remained deadlocked through 90 minutes despite Spain dominating much of the contest. Emiliano Martinez kept Argentina in the game with a series of impressive saves, denying Dani Olmo, Torres and Pau Cubarsi as Spain searched for the breakthrough.
Argentina’s task became even harder in stoppage time when Enzo Fernandez was sent off after picking up a second yellow card for a late challenge on Cubarsi, leaving the defending champions to contest extra time with 10 men.
Spain thought they had found the winner early in extra time when Nico Williams tapped into an empty net, only for the goal to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up.
The breakthrough finally arrived six minutes later. Williams won the aerial duel and knocked the ball into Torres’ path, and the forward reacted quickest to smash his effort into the roof of the net from close range.
The goal sealed a 1-0 victory, earned Spain their second FIFA World Cup title, and extended Luis de la Fuente’s side’s unbeaten run to a European-record 38 international matches.
For Torres, whose tournament had largely been defined by hard work rather than goals, the final provided the perfect stage to make his decisive contribution–one that ensured his name will forever be etched alongside Spain’s greatest World Cup heroes. (ANI)

FIFA World Cup 2026: Mexico President Sheinbaum congratulates Spain, hails tri-nation hosting
New Jersey [US], July 20 (ANI): Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo congratulated Spain on winning the FIFA World Cup 2026 title and hailed the tournament as a celebration of unity, saying the event demonstrated sport’s unique ability to bring nations together.
In a post on X after the conclusion of the tournament, Sheinbaum praised Mexico’s role as one of the three host nations alongside the United States and Canada, while also commending the Mexican national team’s performances.
“The 2026 FIFA World Cup has come to an end. It was a grand celebration of joy, excitement, and unity among peoples, where sport once again demonstrated its power to bring nations together," Mexico President wrote on X.
She also congratulated Mexicans for successfully hosting the tournament and lauded the national team for representing the country with distinction.
“Congratulations to all Mexicans for making Mexico the best host and to our National Team for the outstanding role it played, raising high the name of our country with dedication, talent, and pride," she said.
The Mexican President also congratulated Spain on lifting their second FIFA World Cup trophy.
“Congratulations to Spain for deservedly winning the championship," she added.
Highlighting the collaboration between the three co-host nations, Sheinbaum said the successful staging of the tournament reflected the value of international cooperation.
“The three host countries–Canada, the United States, and Mexico–have shown that, when we work together, we are capable of turning great projects into reality and leaving a legacy of cooperation, friendship, and hope for the world," she said.

No more Rohit Sharma retirement rumours, skipper Shubman Gill rubbishes claims
Before Rohit Sharma came into the Lord’s India vs England ODI, there were a few speculations, that he would retire after the match. Even though BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had confirmed that no such thing was happening, but perhaps the fans were preparing for the worst. Nonetheless, skipper Shubman Gill has refuted all retirement claims now, ending all rumours.
Rohit Sharma is not retiring
And of course, Rohit also gave a good account of his prowess, slamming 138 from 110, when India were chasing a mammoth 388 against the hosts. Speaking on the entire controversy, Gill said, “We have not had a chance. He has not told us anything. I think it’s probably in the media. Not been in discussion at all.”
“We have not had a chance. I mean, he has not told us anything. I think it’s all out in the media, but there’s not been any discussion like that in the team,” Gill repeated almost similar line. In fact, as expected, Shubman was all praise for the veteran, who scored his 34th ODI ton.
Gill says, ‘hasn’t told us anything’
“I think the way Rohit bhai faced the bowlers, he was very calm. Most of the time, I was a non-striker, and watching him, he was very calm. In the powerplay, we were talking about whether to go for a hit or not, but we saw that hitting with a new ball is not that easy. And I think the way he faced the bowlers, and the way he accelerated, I think he got close to 60-70 in quick time. So, he was very calm,” Gill said.
Meanwhile, just to reiterate what Saikia had said… “Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team, and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match.” The Lord’s also culminates Rohit’s poor run in ODIs in 2026, where had just one fifty in 8 games. Now perhaps he is back to being at his best.

“My players are men of their word”: De la Fuente jokes Cucurella must honour tattoo promise after Spain’s FIFA World Cup 2026 triumph
New Jersey [US], July 20 (ANI): Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said defender Marc Cucurella would have to keep his promise of getting the coach’s face tattooed after La Roja defeated Argentina 1-0 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup 2026 trophy on Sunday (local time).
The 27-year-old Cucurella had said before the title clash against Argentina that he would tattoo De la Fuente’s face on his bicep if Spain lifted the trophy, and the coach was reminded of the pledge after guiding Spain to their second World Cup title.
“I am too old for tattoos but my players are men of their word and I know they will stick to their word," the 65-year-old De la Fuente told reporters after the final, as per Reuters.
“They made a mistake, and they will stick to it. I am not that ugly," he added.
Asked where he would like to see the tattoo, the Spain boss laughed before replying, “Maybe a part of the body where it is not visible. But when you say something, you have to stick to their word."
The light-hearted exchange capped a memorable evening for De la Fuente, who added the FIFA World Cup crown to the UEFA Euro 2024 title, further cementing his place among Spain’s most successful national team coaches.
Spain needed extra time to overcome defending champions Argentina in a tense final at MetLife Stadium. Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after latching onto Nico Williams’ knockdown and blasting the ball into the roof of the net.
The victory earned Spain a second World Cup title and extended their unbeaten international run to a European-record 38 matches.
The final was a cagey affair, with both sides struggling to create clear-cut opportunities. Spain dominated possession and came closest in normal time, but Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez repeatedly kept his side in the contest with a string of crucial saves.
The momentum shifted dramatically in stoppage time when Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge on Pau Cubarsi, leaving the holders to play extra time with 10 men.
Spain thought they had taken the lead early in extra time through Nico Williams, only for the effort to be ruled out for a foul in the build-up. Torres eventually broke Argentina’s resistance moments later, sealing a famous victory for the European champions.
Before the final, Cucurella had promised a unique tribute if Spain defeated Argentina.
“I would get a little tattoo of Spain manager Luis de la Fuente’s face on my bicep if we were to win the World Cup," he had said, according to Fox Sports.
The left-back has built a reputation for making headline-grabbing promises. Earlier in his career, the Barcelona academy graduate famously said he would rather shave his head than play for Real Madrid. However, after completing a move to the Spanish giants in June, he opted to keep his trademark long hair.
Whether he keeps his latest promise remains to be seen, but De la Fuente made it clear he expects his players to honour their word after delivering Spain’s greatest triumph in more than a decade. (ANI)
